In recent days we have been creating zentangle art works for the first ten minutes after lunch break. This activity is not only a creative, artistic outlet but also serves as a calming, refocus time for students after the chaos of active lunchtime play.
After a few weeks of planning, we had our first session of Genius Hour last Friday. During this time, students have the opportunity to develop self-directed learning skills. The students have been encouraged to develop an area of interest in a creative and challenging manner. After brainstorming some ideas and then having several days to think about an area of interest, the students began by completing a planning sheet and consolidating a list of what they would actually do and how it might be assessed.
So far we have seen a good variety of activities. Whilst a few students are still struggling with the self-directed aspect of the learning, most are relishing the opportunity to explore and create. Robotics, art, cooking, Rube Goldberg machines, animations, scrapbooking and movie making are a few of the activities being developed. We will post some more photos in coming weeks. The students have been busy constructing Archimedean solids. As you can see from the photos, many of them are rather complicated. They are not all complete as yet. Further further to follow a bit later.
Great job to the master math minds below. 5/6C students made something orange (the colour of Harmony Day) to wear for the assembly. We watched several shorts clips about bullying issues then held a class discussion about the messages shown in the films.
Following this we brainstormed some thoughts that we might share as a class pledge at assembly and created a class poster for the wall of the hall. |
